Simone Biles in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Simone Biles shocked the world when she decided to step down from the competition in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. No one has ever seen an athlete as talented as Biles step down from the Olympics, which meant that her reasoning had to be important.

Simone Biles decided to stop competing after only one rotation on the vault, the reason for this was due to mental health issues. After stepping down Biles would again be evaluated, but a medical evaluation had determined that she was not yet ready to be back and competing yet.

Although many Americans were sad to see her step down and let another gymnast compete, she received lots of support. The United States Gymnastics organization made a statement on Twitter that “we wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many”

After Biles had decided to step down, the topic of mental health was brought to the center of attention as many athletes started to speak about their troubles and how it is something that should be taken seriously.

On Instagram she posted a picture on July 26 with the caption saying that “It wasn't an easy day or my best but I got through it. I truly feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders”.

After Biles stepped down from her first event, she decided to still stay on the sidelines to ensure that she was focusing on her mental health. But, as the next Tuesday came around she had decided to compete in the last event for artistic gymnastics, which was the balance beam. The gymnast was greeted by teammates and others in the gymnastics center with a standing ovation.

Despite Simone not competing for the rest of the events, she still managed to wow those who were watching by placing third out of a total of eight people. After winning the bronze medal, which makes her total seven, she ranks tied with Shannon Miller for the most medals won by an American gymnast at the Olympics.

For athletes sometimes it is not all about the money, prizes, or medals, but it is about enjoying competing and what is best for you. Biles shows that you can win medals, prizes or money while still managing to put yourself first.
